BlueWave is proud to be a certified B Corp, recognized by B Labs as "Best in the World" in Governance.About the role:We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Managing Director of Business Development to lead our efforts in identifying and pursuing market opportunities for solar and battery storage projects. This role will be instrumental in shaping BlueWave's strategic direction and driving profitable growth. The Managing Director of Business Development will be responsible for diverse business development activities including strategy identification, new market development, power markets origination, marketing and EPC support. This is an executive role with substantial responsibility for setting the strategic direction of the company.What you'll do:
- Own the analysis and selection of new market opportunities at BlueWave, with input from the Policy, Capital Markets, Site Acquisition, Power Markets, Development and Operations and Executive teams.
- Form a strategic view on our approach to new markets based on intel gathered and author new market entry plans.
- New Market Development:
- Directly manage a small team of senior project developers focused on establishing pipeline and presence in new markets (currently IL, MD, MI and WI) to execute new market entry plans.
- Identify and foster strategic land and offtake acquisition partnerships (e.g. agricultural organizations, commercial real estate companies, State agencies, and local commercial operations).
- Become familiar with all State and municipal regulatory permitting requirements.
- Spend substantial time in-market to identify opportunities, establish relationships and execute market entry plans.
- Policy:
- Collaborate closely with internal policy team on policy positions and key relationships to drive market development based on intel gathered.
- Drive financial analysis of policy positions and alternatives at inflection points in the market development process.
- Power Origination:
- Supervise BlueWave's Power Origination team to deliver offtake requirements including community solar subscriber acquisition, solar anchor offtake acquisition and storage and solar PPA origination.
- Mentor and develop team members to build long-term expertise.
- Marketing:
- Manage BlueWave's marketing efforts to support Site Acquisition, Policy, Development, Offtake, Capital Markets and Operations KPIs.
- Oversee planning and execution of onsite events at BlueWave-owned projects to highlight agrivoltaics, storage and solar leadership.
- Manage PR consultants to advance BlueWave industry thought leadership.
- Build and burnish the BlueWave brand to drive recruiting and retention KPIs.
- EPC and Underwriting Support:
- Through market development scope, gather key underwriting inputs to support market- and project-level financial analysis.
- Collaborate closely with the Preconstruction team to form
relationships with strong EPCs and contractors in new markets to
support project costing and bidding.Qualifications:
- 10+ years of business development experience, with a particular focus on new market development for renewable energy projects a plus;
- Sound understanding of the greenfield real estate development process;
- Outside, in-market business development track record with proven ability to identify and execute partnerships with a range of counterparties;
- Experience with new process development and implementation where market uncertainty is present;
- Analytical and financial modeling within Excel and proficiency with the total Microsoft Office suite;
- Understanding of complex concepts (tax rules, energy policy, financial structures, etc.);
- Strong organizational and communication skills;
- Self-motivated mindset with a high level of initiative and accountability;
- Comfort with a traveling 50%+ of work time;
- Ability to perform site visits;
- A passion for renewable energy and a commitment to
sustainability.
